MOBULA7 UPGRADE: EAsiest way to go props out to improve flight

Reversing the rotation of all of your propellers (known as 'props out') is something you commonly do on larger quads to eliminate debris bring flung into your FPV camera and to push obstacles like branches clear. Obviously these don't apply when the props are gaurded like in a Mobula 7 but there is also a hypothesis out there that it can improve flight characteristics such as note on KababFPV's video here. Some of the beta fpv guys also believe it helps with yaw washout but the evidence appears inconclusive. Typically to do this correctly you need to
  1. Remove and swap all of the props
  2. Reverse each ESC direction in BL Heli Suite
  3. Tick 'reverse props' in betflight.
The method documented here allows you to skip steps 1 and 2 which is especially useful because you can run the risk of damaging the rather fragile motors when removing and re-installing the propellers. Just a quick note the the Eachine trashcan comes default with reversed-props.

This is the fourth article in my series of HappyModel Mobula7 upgrades, many of which can be used for the Trashcan too. Also to come are:
  • Swapping to a much more durable frame
  • Improving the battery connector for more power
  • tuning betaflight filters more specifically for brushless whoops,
  • propeller upgrades.
  • receiver range improvement
  • modding your 1s battery to be a proper 2s
All links will be updated here when completed. Many of these I've completed the work and am testing at present - it's starting to feel like a more complete little quad now. If you're looking for my review including setup it can be found here
Below are the steps to take when changing to props out. I'd recommend doing this when switching frames. I did it when I upgraded to the v3/trashcan frame as I wrote about here. Use the little philips screwdriver that came with your quadcopter. Click images to embiggen.

1. Remove the motor pins from the board. Rather than tuggin the wire I'd recommend using small pliers or tweezers to pull on the plastic connector instead.

2. Next you will need to unscrew all four motors and take note of where the motors with red wires are and where the motors with black wires are. DO NOT REMOVE THE PROPS!

3. Now swap locations of the red and black-wired motors and replace the screws. For me the new location for red-wired motors is front right and rear left. (This picture is from below)

4. Finally jump into betaflight and tick the box that says "motor direction is reversed". End result should look like the image above.
That's it - easy eh? If the quad flips out when you throttle up, check the physical rotation is the same as shown in the betaflight image for prop rotation above.

Hi! Great article. I was actually looking for some advice about making the props stay in the motor shaft more secure. I've been having some issues with the tightness of my props and i'm tired of loosing them almost every time i fly. Do you know how can i adjust them and keep them in place?

Thanks!

Hi Noel

Sorry for the late response. I'd recommend trying some dental tape (tooth floss) to jam in beside the shaft or a very small amound of superglue. Be very careful if you use superglue - do it upside down so it doesn't get into the motor.

Had the same problem. I put a tiny drop of Blue Loctite on the shafts using a toothpick and it fixed the issue. Just don't use Red Loctite.

Blue loctite sounds like a better idea so long as it doesn't eat the plastic.

I figured out this trick as a kid some 30 years ago when some of my lego minifigures had a head that was too loose. Get a big black marker pen and color the shaft black. It adds just enough material for the prop to fit snuggly. After losing a prop I tried it, and haven't had a problem after that.

Haha that is awesome, used tooth floss but it created imbalance. Yours is the winner!
