The Eachine Tyro79 is a low cost brushless high performance FPV quadcopter that is sold sold as a kit exclusively from Banggood. I have written a full review here and the popularity has prompted me to write this full and final upgrade guide after nearly a year of testing, tweaking and changing parts. Sadly my Tyro 79 has been lost in a dense bush area and I have not been able to recover so cannot share pictures of the upgraded on the quad. However, I have noted carefully what has worked for me and this is shared below split into the following systems:
FPV systems (Came, VTX, Antennas, Goggles) I put this first as I think the most crucial improvements are here. Without mincing words the default camera is awful. Although it was working well for the first one or two flights you can see from this video below in slightly overcast conditions that it can be nearly impossible to fly. The good news is that the tyro79 takes a standard micro 19mm camera and there are some good options available for not much money as below. This is the very first upgrade I would recommend.
I had no issues with the VTX personally but have seen several people who have online. The 20x20mm VTX that the tyro79 uses is very common and there are some excellent options available. My three recommendations are below as your budget allows but all three offer smar audio control and a minimum of 200mW maximum power which is plenty for this quad. All require soldering and/or splicing of wires. With that said I used the stock VTX right up until the end. If you do want the stock vtx it can be found here but I'd honestly recommend one of the below ones in its place.
The Tyro 79 uses a basic dipole antenna connect to the VTX by mirco UFL - another common standard. These are perfect fine when flying by yourself and as durable as it gets. I would recommend a MenaceRC Bandicoot Linear Patch Antenna if your goggles have diversity though for increased range. If you are flying with others though yoy will want a circularly polarised antenna. These three below are compact, reliable and connect directly to your VTX.
Budget plays a hug part on choosing goggles if you haven't done so already. I'm wary to recommend spending too much at the moment such is the impact of the HD DJI systems but bang for buck in any category is the Aomway commander V1s which is being cleared at less than $200. My full review of that goggle is here. Other goggles I can recommend are the Fatshark OLED Attitude V5 (review here) and of course the skyzone SKY03O OLED goggles (review here). Motors and Props If the camera is the first thing you should change, the props are most definitely the second and regardless, they are a consumable item anyway. The stock 4-blades are awful - loud, inefficient and full of vibrations. Prop choice can vary depending on flying style but the below options are all very durable, efficient and reliable
The stock motors are heavy, have bearings that are prone to premature wear and have awful plastic coated wires but they fly fine. If you damage or want to upgrade I'd recommend the options below. They are all physically smaller and lighter than the stock ones but make more power and are more durable
Electronics (Flight controller and ESC) This is pretty much a case of "if it's working it's fine". If you do have issues I only have one recommendation which is just so much better value than anything else around:
Frame I'd only recommend replacing the stock frame if it gets damaged. Given this is a 1-piece bottom plate this is a distinct possibility and I'd recommend the following option as a replacement. Not, some trimming of wires may be required with these frames but the components will fit.
Batteries 4s is the number of cells you will want for the tyro79 even if starting since maximum throttle can ealiy be limited if needed (see article here). Capacity will be a matter of preference though. I'd recommend 650-850mah in general - smaller than 650mah won't be able to supply enough current at full throttle and larger than 850 will start making it feel heavy and sluggish. I personally run CNHL ministar 4s 650mah but here are a few options: Control gear (Receiver and Transmitter) I run FRSKY gear and will look at only these options for the purpose of this review. I feel it is a good price/performance ratio but of course there are cheaper and more expensive options. For receivers:
Things are getting a little more tricky with transmitters now that FRSKY is going with the closed source ACCESS protocol and my choices below reflect this:
Add Ons Probably the first add on you might consider is an HD cam. The Tyro79 can carry a stand-alone HD cam, particularly some of the lighter ones but performance does take a bit of a hit. Alternatively you can replace your FPV cam with one of the split options - a camera and board that transmits in regular analogue but can record in HD
Betaflight flight software Betaflight is the free flight firmware that comes installed on the flight controller. By upgrading to 4.1.1 or above will see a big improvement as the stock tune is now excellent. You can go one step further and install JESC on the 4 in 1 ESC for around $5. This will allow you to run 48k frequency on your motors which add smoothness and extend flight time but more importantly this firmware adds bi-directional dshot meaning you can run RPM filtering that everyone is talking about. This seems to be the single biggest improvement to tuning I have seen in my time in the hobby. Sadly I did not get to write my guide for RPM filtering on the Tyro79 before I lost it but install is straightforward and there are a lot of guides out there. Summary Well that wraps up my Tyro79 upgrade guide. More detail above of course but the very first things I upgraded were props and camera because the stock items were miserable. VTX was fine as was ESC and FC but there are good budget options to replace these line the diatone mamba stack and the vtxs above. Upgrading motors will give you a good performance bump but I'd stick with the stock ones until they die. Having a number of good batteries is key, you'll need these regardless but definitely go for 4s. Radio gear is farily personal but I still like FRSKY because it is a reliable link and receivers are small and inexpensive. Adding an HD cam is a good way to capture you flight in high definition. If you have the energy, go for one of the split cam options because hauling a stand alone HD camera can tax performance. Have you tried the recommended upgrade cameras? Caddx Ratel doesn't fit - the lens is too big in diameter and even the frame cutouts for the camera lens are not enough.

Hmm you are probably right. I've tried the razer and arrow (as well as robin and racer) but they all have smaller lenses. I run a ratel on another quad but lost my tyro79 before I could try the ratel. Will update the article, thanks.

I filed down the frame 1.4mm on each side for the caddx ratel too for with a simple round file. I also used spring type washers to screw the camera tight

You had no trouble loading JESC to the stock esc and FC? I'm trying to confirm if it worked for the Matek F411 board the Tyro79 runs on or if there are cwrtain workarounds and additional steps that must be taken or if it's a straight shot like the rest of the mainstream boards out there.

I installed JazzMaverick with no issue. Matek F411 absolutely has the ability to run RPM filtering without workaround. I run 4k/4k dshot300 on other similar boards. Unfortunately my tyro79 is lost as I mentioned but it was no issue to install Jazzmaverick 16.77 and betaflight 4.1x for RPM filtering

A question: will the "Runcam Split 3 Mini" you suggest fit inside the frame or the board will be needed to be mounted outside?

You may be able to fit inside however you might need to be creative with the stack mounts rather than relying on full height standoffs. You can absolutely use smaller nano cameras with this frame but you will need this adaptor: https://bit.ly/3ddpbJE

hi ive just purchased this kit myself im looking at using a crossfire nano i cant see anyone else using one can you let me know what pads you soldered to was it just tx1 rx1 and then the 5v and gnd next to the led?

Thanks a lot for the explanation, this helps a lot. Emax 1404 sounds like an interesting option, however 9mm mount won't fit the original frame, and it looks like it uses a different prop mount system, so it isn't a drop in replacement. Also you mention that it is good for lightweight builds, and Tyro79 is not very light, especially if to shove an hd cam on top, something I was thinking about doing :)

It's very annoying that there are not many motors available with the same mounting pattern of 12mmx12mm, only the last ones you linked will fit I think.
